About Atelier Kunstnerforbundet
Located in Kunstnerforbundet's premises in the centre of Oslo, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet is a studio collective and a pioneering project in the field of public engagement.

Based on a two-year cycle Atelier Kunstnerforbundet fosters artistic and cultural production by offering free-of-charge studios for artists, in combination with a customised programme geared towards the development of their practices.

Located in Kunstnerforbundet’s two upper floors, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet takes over 287 sqm of the building and makes use of all its resources. It consists of four studio spaces with a collective kitchen, and toilet. Additionally, a larger loft space is also independently accessible, functioning both as project space and for hosting a variety of events. The studios can be accessed 24/7 through its own independent entrance.

In addition to the exposure to Kunstnerforbundet’s audiences, groups, and networks, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet can provide project funds, studio visits and workshops with national and international guests. Please note that the program is dependent on yearly external funding and other available resources.

Drawing from models of community-building, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet aims to foster new modes of participation, support interrelated practices of visual art, and bridge relations to cultures in a plurality of perspectives. The immediate proximity between the artists, the institution and the public facilitates access to professional expertise, networks, and resources. In a collective effort of connecting practices and contexts, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet is part of what makes Kunstnerforbundet a cultural institution.

We organise an open house for artists who wish to apply for studios on Friday 20 October at 15:00-18:00.

Please Note
In solidarity with the ongoing studio-situation in Oslo, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet prioritises artists that do not have other studio spaces. Exceptions for material-based practices with the need for workshops can be made.

Atelier Kunstnerforbundet is a collective studio programme focusing on the growth of artistic practices. Applicants should be interested in engaging with fellow studio-artists, the ongoing programme of local and international exchanges, as well as with the multitude of resources originating from Kunstnerforbundet’s exhibition programme, artists network, cultural thinkers, and audience groups.

Atelier Kunstnerforbundet is regrettably not accessible for people with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Kunstnerforbundet is engaged in a long-term rehabilitation process of its building.

If you have any queries about accessibility at Atelier Kunstnerforbundet, please get in touch.

Oslo Open honorary award 2022

Atelier Kunstnerforbundet received Oslo Open's honorary award in 2022. The award is given by the board of Oslo Open and aims to lift and honour those who contribute to improving the artists’ working situation – studios, production, and working conditions.

The board’s motivation for giving the honorary award to Atelier Kunstnerforbundet is to honour the important choice to create a new studio programme within the framework of an established art institution. This is a well-known move, artists have for a long time combined exhibition spaces and studio collectives, and is recommended for others both within and outside the field of art. Well-known, but not overly used, so when an art instution of a one hundred year history makes this move, it calls for attention.
