Kunstnerforbundet wishes to mark World AIDS Day in commemoration of the historical events that have run parallel and intertwined with the many lives that have been part of the institution and the art scene in Norway. The acknowledgement of World AIDS Day at Kunstnerforbundet is curated in collaboration with Atelier Kunstnerforbundet.
To mark World AIDS Day 2024 on 1 December, Atelier Kunstnerforbundet’s artist Bendik Bendik exhibits the new site-specific work “JEG VIL MINNE DEG PÅ” at the entrance of Kunstnerforbundet (oil pastels on canvas, 430 × 600 cm).
Commissioned by Atelier Kunstnerforbundet to mark World AIDS Day 2024, Bendik Bendik’s new site-specific work JEG VIL MINNE DEG PÅ [I want to remind you about], is based on the artist’s personal relationships to the topic. The work finds its starting point in his childhood memories from the 80s HIV/AIDS Crisis; and in a related story often told by his mother that became the basis for the artist’s relationship to the topic up until he had to personally engage with the generational trauma that spread – one of the consequences of the crisis’ media coverage.
While in the process of research towards this new work, it became apparent to Bendik Bendik that this consequence was mainly traceable across immaterial and subjective feelings and unwritten norms within gay communities. In light of the difficulty with bringing together these, he felt that this new work could perhaps contribute to the marking of World AIDS Day 2024 by offering a reminder of how things have been and gone, while still being a challenge.
When speaking about this research process, he reflected about how “As a minority, one inherits stories and learnings that one has not grown up with, but that many have through life. Weirdly and wonderfully, those that come after are to read into the remnants of it all, as we are generously invited to a more open and free reflection that becomes part of a common memory.”
Inside the gallery rooms the audience can find Bendik Bendik’s work Verdens AIDS-dag / JEG VIL MINNE DEG PÅ – REFLEKS. These reflective keychains were produced in a limited edition of 100 and are available to the audience free of charge in commemoration of World AIDS Day.
In the window of Kunstnerforbundet, Bendik Bendik's artwork JEG BRUKTE MYE TID PÅ Å BEARBEIDE FRYKT PÅ VEGNE AV ANDRE is available for sale (pencil on paper, unique, 21 × 29.7 cm, NOK 5000). The artwork's sale will be donated to HivNorge. HivNorge is a non-partisan and religiously independent national patient- and interest-organisation for people living with HIV, relatives and others affected or concerned about HIV.

Bendik Bendik (b. 1996, Norway, he/him/all) lives and works in Oslo. His practice is performance-based and explorative through mediums of video, photography, and installation. Bendik’s works can be read in a context of trials and challenges within normative perceptions and gender identities. He often explores scenarios in which one is stuck, in the relationship between the body’s unused functions and exposed actions. Ongoing projects are locally anchored with a political, social, and historical engagement, as Bendik raises questions about urban development and prejudice in the perception of a place. Bendik holds a bachelor’s in fine art from Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO, 2022).
On the occasion of World AIDS Day 2024 and through Atelier Kunstnerforbundet’s visiting program, Bendik Bendik has been in conversation with Kjetil Holløkken, Tom Aarø, Kristin Marie Holland (Rådgiver, HivNorge), Håkon Lillegraven, as well as with friends and allies that do not wish to be named but who thanks are warmly extended to. Special thanks to Tor Falch, Vega Syversætre Johannessen, and Svein Dybvik for countless conversations and help with the making of this artwork. The acknowledgement of World AIDS Day at Kunstnerforbundet is co-curated Martina Petrelli and Lars Sture.
